Through November, think brown paper for the tablecloth, mallets and crackers for the silverware. At Phillips Seafood in the Inner Harbor, a proper Maryland crab feast is a true rite. Here diners smash steamed “meats” on a new waterfront deck (“a fun place to make a crabby mess”). Across the harbor, blue crabs star year-round at Canton Dockside. Specialties at this upscale crab shack: a house-made pretzel topped with crab dip, cheddar and pepper jack cheese and the “Crab Fluffs”—lump crab cakes dipped in tempura batter and deep fried.
