Serenades: Operatic Baltimore

Whether aficionado or neophyte, opera fans find big talent in small spaces—a historic mansion, a church, even a restaurant.

With a conservatory like the acclaimed Peabody Institute, it’s no surprise opera has a following here. But several small companies go for a more casual vibe. The Peabody’s own chamber opera performs two one-acts February 6-9 at Baltimore Theatre Project, while Baltimore Concert Opera highlights the voice (no sets or costumes) for productions in a historic mansion February 28, March 2, April 11 and April 13. Baltimore Rock Opera stages fist-pumping epics like Gründlehämmer March 14-23 at St. John’s church, and even restaurant Sotto Sopra gets in on the act with a monthly opera night.
