Black Ankle Vineyards

When Ed Boyce and Sarah O’Herron started here in 2002, they planted nearly 1,900 vines per acre—almost triple the 2001 state average of 668 vines. And that work paid off. Named one of America’s “hottest small brands” by Wine Business Monthly, the young vineyard won the Maryland Governor’s Cup three of the last four years.

A tasting room opens at noon (Fridays through Sundays) with seven varieties of reds, four whites and local cheeses, and an hour-long tour of the vineyard and winery runs each Saturday and Sunday at 1 pm. Oenophiles order snacks or bring their own picnics to outdoor tables, and Fireside Fridays beginning at 6 pm mean live jazz, blues and acoustic guitar. Kids welcome.
