The Texas equivalent of a neighborhood pub, this bar and restaurant attracts a loyal clientele, many of them state workers, attorneys, and political types from the nearby capitol. The ambience is funky bar meets roadhouse. The highlight of the menu is, of course, chili, served at varying degrees of heat and completely without beans (beans are a Yankee aberration). Sandwiches, tacos, and burgers are also on the menu, plus something called a Frito Pie, a Texas original—the recipe begins, “Take one bag of Fritos . . . ” Open for lunch and dinner daily.
