“Is this gluten free?” Five years ago, not many people would have known how to answer that question. Today, it’s estimated that one in 133 Americans has celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder triggered by the consumption of gluten. What’s more, research approximates that 18 million Americans have non-celiac gluten sensitivity. With such hefty numbers, it’s clear to see gluten free is more than just a weight-loss fad. Here are some of our favorite restaurants that cater to gluten-free diners with delicious dishes that even a non-celiac patron can savor.

1Kept Kitchen & Bar

This gorgeous bar's owner is married to a celiac, so the menu contains any number of gluten-free options with an emphasis on preventing cros-contamination. 1Kept has a passion for creating flavorful food from fresh ingredients with a menu featuring seafood, steak, creative salads and starters. Across The Street

This quaint eatery is a safe haven for those who love Mexican food and follow a gluten-free diet. Across the Street goes above and beyond to prevent cross contact and can detail all of the ingredients in their food, if needed. Many options that are usually suspect, such as nachos and tortilla, sweet potato and plantain chips are prepared in a dedicated fryer making them safe and delicious. Try their brisket, fajitas, goat cheese enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas, and tostadas made with corn tortillas, or a bowl of their pumpkin and corn chowder. Arepa Mia, Atlanta, GA

Arepa Mia

Arepa Mia serves up traditional Venezuelan cuisine on an entirely gluten-free menu where corn is the main ingredient.  Arepa sandwiches, cachapas (semi-sweet corn pancake), empanadas, fried sweet plantains, queso, tostones, and more fill the colorful menu, which is loaded with meats, cheeses, and vegetables prepared slow and layered with flavor. Bartaco

The menu at this beachy restaurant is more than 80 percent gluten-free, making it an easy choice for those steering clear of gluten. Their two-bite tacos are served on corn tortillas and include all manner of meat and vegetables. Be sure to try the baja fish, ribeye and portobello mushroom tacos. Chick-a-Biddy

Fried chicken tenders and mac n’ cheese take center stage at this casual restaurant. In fact, the only version of chicken tenders and mac n’ cheese they serve are gluten-free, and patrons can’t tell the difference. Gluten-free options are clearly marked on the menu and include homemade pimento cheese served with veggies and Mary’s Gone Crackers—a fried chicken sandwich on a gluten-free bun—onion rings, and much more. FuegoMundo Atlanta

This restaurant highlights the flavors of Latin America with fresh, all-natural, dairy-free and certified Kosher ingredients prepared on a wood-fire grill. Every entreé and side on the menu is naturally gluten- and dairy-free. Every side is also vegan. FuegoMundo chefs take extra precaution by grilling fish, tofu and vegetables separately from meats and poultry to care for vegetarians and people with food sensitivities. Kaleidoscope Bistro & Pub

This neighborhood pub denotes their gluten-free fare with a "GF" in a circle. The star of the menu is their gluten-free, on-the-bone Springer Mountain Farms fried chicken. The chicken is brined in buttermilk, battered in corn starch and rice flour and fried-to-order in dedicated fryers. Most of Kaleidoscope's fried options are either gluten free or can be prepared in gluten-free batter. Indian curry spring rolls, wings, fried calamari, duck fat French fries, and herb-crusted salmon are a few of our favorite options. Le Metro Creperie

This is the only restaurant in Atlanta serving up sweet and savory gluten-free crêpes, crêpe cones, and crêpe lasagna. Take a seat at the counter and order a Perfect Pimento crêpe made with homemade pimento cheese, crumbled bacon, diced tomatoes, and balsamic fig jelly, or build a custom creation from their proteins, cheeses, veggies, fruits, and sweets. Osteria Mattone

Nestled in the Roswell suburbs, this Italian restaurant was named Top 100 Neighborhood Restos in America 2014 by Open Table. Their twist on Italian cuisine includes many gluten-free options, including three types of gluten-free pasta (Le Veneziane and two others), antipasti, salads, meats, and more. Be sure to save room for one of their handmade gluten-free desserts because they are the real deal. One of their employees has a child with a life threatening food allergy, so the restaurant knows the steps necessary to create a safe and delicious meal. 1095 Canton St., Roswell, 678.878.3378. $$

Shake Shack, Atlanta, GA

Shake Shack

This classic hot dog, burger, frozen custard and ice cream eatery has a cult following, and for good reason. The signature tastes at this fast-casual restaurant are accented by local ingredients—like buns from H&F Bread Co.—to create a Shacktastic dining experience. Until recently, though, GF diners had to settle for tasty patties wrapped in lettuce—but not anymore. 2017 got off to a great start as the Shack announced gluten-free buns are now on the menu. True Food Kitchen

True Food Kitchen’s delicious and varied menu is comprised wholly of anti-inflammatory foods using Georgia-sourced produce. At least half of the menu is gluten free or can be modified to accommodate a gluten allergy. Expect to leave this healthy spot feeling full and energized after indulging in creative and flavorful dishes, like the “inside out” quinoa burger, turkey lasagna and spaghetti squash casserole—all gluten free. TWO Urban Licks

Sitting on the Atlanta BeltLine in the Old Fourth Ward, TWO Urban Licks delivers large portions of ambiance, outdoor seating and taste. Add to that a manager who has celiac disease, and you’ve got one knockout gluten-free experience. Live music fills the air of this revamped warehouse as chefs hover over wood-fire grills in the open kitchen. Red accents, dim lighting and killer cocktails make the restaurant perfect for date night or girls’ night out. Get your burger and hot dog fix at this West Midtown staple, a favorite among gluten-phobic and gluten-filled patrons, alike. Yeah! Burger uses Udi’s buns to sandwich all-natural patties and grass-fed beef dogs. The menu features an outstanding variety of gluten-free options, including fried chicken and vegan patties. Try the signature burgers or create your own concoction by choosing the patty, bun, cheese and toppings. Your Pie

Pizza isn’t typically on a gluten-free diner’s menu. At Your Pie, you not only get to have your pie and eat it, but you also get to build it to your gluten-free specifications. This fast-casual eatery doesn’t mess around with gluten allergies, making each gluten-free pie in the kitchen, far from possible cross-contaminants. The end result is a crispy crust topped with your favorite ingredients. Or, you can pick one of the tried-and-true configurations, like the Nat, which has a fresh basil pesto base topped with mozzarella and feta cheeses, grilled chicken, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes.
