Turquoise, coral, recycled glass, wood beads hammered gold, vintage crystals ... we check in with 5 of the city's hottest jewelery designers.

Kathleen Plate | Smartglass Recycled Jewelry
Raised in an eco-minded home in Seattle, Kathleen Plate started Smartglass Recycled Jewelry, a line of products created from recycled glass bottles, 17 years ago, after creating a pair of stained-glass earring for a friend while in graduate school at Georgia State University. Through the years, the company has grown from a small local business with one line of jewelry to a large company with multiple product lines and several corporate-licensed accounts (including The Coca-Cola Company); she recently launched a home line that includes custom lighting, curtains and wall art. www.smartglassjewelry.com

Ali Howell | Ali & Bird
Don’t let Ali Howell’s size fool you—the petite blonde is as bold and vivacious as the jewelry she creates. The Memphis native's one-of-a-kind, handmade creations (no two are exactly alike) employ natural stones and other materials including turquoise, coral amazonite, agate, jade, agite, quartz, oyster pearls and citrines—colors cover the spectrum from natural white coral to yellow jade, bright blue turquoise, red coral and everything between. www.aliandbird.com

Dawn Muscio | D. Musico
Everything is one-of-a-kind at D. Musico Fine Jewelry Studio in Brookhaven, a hidden gem where owner/designer Dawn Muscio, along with partner Jacqueline Williams, creates “wearable artwork.” Most of the studio’s works are custom commissions, all of which are done in-house, by hand. Each piece—whether a re-design or new—starts with a consultation where Musico will make multiple sketches, the best of which will be turned into 3-D computer animated design (CAD) mock-ups and a life-size wax replica. Only then does she create the finished product which is, of course, as beautiful as you imagined. www.dmuscio.com

Mickey Lynn | Mickey Lynn Jewelry
The local jeweler spent 10 years working as an IT professional before pursuing her “hobby” full-time. Today, she has her own studio and gallery in the artsy Tula Arts Center on Bennett Street’s gallery row. It is here where she creates her contemporary designs—including hammered gold hoops, zodiac necklaces and mix-and-match mini charm necklaces—that have earned her a star following including Christina Applegate, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Miley Cyrus. www.mickeylynn.com

Mark Edge| Mark Edge Jewelry
Mark Edge has created gorgeous handcrafted jewelry for more than two decades; his pieces grace the necks, wrists, ears and fingers of such notable stars as Drew Barrymore, Courtney Cox and Joy Behar—his jewelry is even featured in Sundance Catalog. The designer’s one-of-a-kind creations incorporate semi-precious beads, Austrian crystals, wire and gold; his latest eco-vintage collection is fashioned from reclaimed gems, reused charms, and vintage crystals and chains. “It is beautiful, classical jewelry that accents the individuality of the women who wears it,” Edge says. www.markedge.com
