Portland Entertainment+Nightlife: Alameda Brewing Co.
Alameda Brewing Co.
Look for the huge copper hop in front of the Alameda brewpub—consider it a beacon for those seeking quality, hand-crafted ales. Alameda’s head brewmaster Craig Nicholls is preparing some of the finest microbrews in town, especially the Black Bear Double Stout, which aficionados are calling one of the best nitro-pours anywhere. (Nitrogen causes all those tiny little bubbles that make the “cascading effect” and gives ales that delicious creamy head.) Alameda offers nine unique regular micros along with two or three seasonals and their popular homemade root beer. With well-priced 20-ounce pints, it’s a great value. The food is excellent, affordable, and far more ambitious than standard pub grub. Entrees range from whiskey baby-back ribs to artichoke linguini to smoked chicken ravioli. Sandwiches and burgers are standouts too. A children’s menu is also available. The atmosphere—galvanized metal, acid-stained floor, and the white maple/stainless-steel hop-yard theme—works splendidly, as the brewery itself is located in the dining area.
