The team behind Central Square’s popular Central Bottle wine shop and Kendall Square dining stalwart The Blue Room, have opened Belly, a 45-seat wine bar nestled in a handsome subterranean nook. Originally a 19th-century mill, the space is chock-full of stylish touches such as wood beams, plank ceilings, salvaged girder tables, and an Italian porcelain-tile floor. The diminutive marble bar is a perfect spot for sampling from the suitably lengthy wine list’s colorful categories (“Rocks in Your Mouth,” “A Wee Bit Sparkling”), with 30 labels by the glass in both two- and five-ounce pours. Also sporting a sense of humor is the ever-changing cheese program with selections dubbed “Funk” and “the Blues.” Executive chef Robert Grant mans the kitchen and oversees a carnivorous menu with items from marrow bones and lamb belly bacon to a dry-aged rib eye for two. But the show-stopper is the family-style “Arm & A Leg” dinner that requires a minimum party of four and 48 hours advance notice. Not for the faint of heart, this experience includes four courses featuring various parts of a whole animal (e.g. house-made cracklings, roasted pork shoulder and pig trotters)!
